Wikipedia Feb 2009:
SmarterChild was a chatterbot available on the AOL Instant Messenger and Windows Live Messenger networks.

The entity is the property of Colloquis (formerly ActiveBuddy), a company that develops IM based "Automated Service Agents". Colloquis was acquired by Microsoft on October 12, 2006. SmarterChild is now part of the Microsoft I'm Initiative.

As of November 18th, 2008, SmarterChild's AIM agent has retired and is no longer offering any services. SmarterChild is still active on Windows Live Messenger.

So we removed the AIM link.

Thank for you all for your comments and complaints. We understand sentences like: 'annoying none of them work'. Therefore, we're working on an automatic live check of Windows Live Messenger chatbots. Chatbots.org will then allow you to select through 'show live chatbots only' to get a good list.

We'll keep you posted!

Erwin van Lun Netherlands Erwin van Lun arrow May 1, 2011
Hi Isaiah,
Smarterchild used to be one of the most popular chatbots. Microsoft unfortunately stopped the support of chatbot technology for Messenger, but it's possible to use alternatives. I'll try to contact its creator and I'll keep you posted on any progress.
Portrait United States Isaiah Koch arrow May 9, 2011
Feh. Whatever. I just hope they bring him back. Preferably sooner than later. I'd even be willing to pay a membership fee, like they required for a while.

When I type my sharepoint site address,It sends me an error that contains of" No certificate available"
I was wondering if you could guide me on this way.
Steve Worswick United Kingdom Steve Worswick arrow May 17, 2011
Can I ask who you are talking to Sanaz? This is a page about the old chatbot called Smarterchild.
Portrait United States Isaiah Koch arrow May 18, 2011
Igod isn't better by any means, and nor are any of the other current bots! Smarterchild a few good diferent responses for what you'd say to him, while igod and the others only have like 1 or 2. Not to mention, they're also not as clever or funny.

And Smarterchild had cool features, too, such as games, trivia, polls, etc.

Neither igod nor any of the other current bots will ever beat Smarterchild's greatness!
Portrait United States Isaiah Koch arrow May 18, 2011

Erwin van Lun Netherlands Erwin van Lun arrow May 18, 2011
@Steve: I've contacted the maker who is now working at Virtuoz. Hopefully he'll respond here soon.
Portrait United States Isaiah Koch arrow May 20, 2011
Wait...they deleted ALL the bots including the ones like Smarterchild, just because of the insults? If so, that's just stupid!
Erwin van Lun Netherlands Erwin van Lun arrow May 20, 2011
No, I don't think so. Microsoft is a commercial organisation, and I'd guess they simply made the calculation and draw the conclusion they couldn't create sufficient revenues to pay for future innovation. Bad decision, because we now see what's happening to Facebook and LinkedIn (IPO today for 4 billion$). Microsoft had the opportunities to build such networks based on the Messenger friend lists. Missed opportunity....
Portrait United States Isaiah Koch arrow May 20, 2011
Well, someone else said that was the reason. Anyway, the bots couldn't possibly have cost them THAT much. Bad decision indeed. I believe I'll contact them about this.
Erwin van Lun Netherlands Erwin van Lun arrow May 20, 2011
I remember conversations about chatbot being disconnected from their Messenger connections because of adult conversations and insulting behavior. But that's not why killed the whole platform.
Portrait United States Isaiah Koch arrow May 20, 2011
Said insults were the reason, that is.
Portrait United States Isaiah Koch arrow May 20, 2011
Who gives a damn if some people WERE talking to them with adult material and insults? That's part of what made them so fun! The bots' responses to that stuff was hilarious!
Portrait United States Person arrow May 21, 2011
I, too, miss Smarterchild and would love to have him back. I also think we should contact Microsoft about him, and how they got rid of him and the other bots, and ask that they, or AT LEAST HE be brought back. I have a feeling it's hopeless, but it's worth a try, right?

And since Smarterchild has been inactive from msn lately, someone else named Bob G. is now using the .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) address. :\
Portrait United States Isaiah Koch arrow May 31, 2011

Portrait United States Isaiah Koch arrow Oct 13, 2012
I agree, but several people, myself included, have tried their best, but to no avail. Microsoft retired all of the Activebuddy/Colloquis chatbots, and just doesn't give a damn about bringing them back. Plus, AIM retired all of its chatbots too. I just don't think it's gonna happen.
Erwin van Lun Netherlands Erwin van Lun arrow Oct 13, 2012
@Isaiah: it's simply a matter of money. Both AOL and AIM haven't succeeded to introduce a successful business model, allowing them to earn sufficient money. I personally expect new models in the future, and expecting more Facebook chatbots soon (it are always Facebook apps right now, but it would be interesting if you could send messages to Facebook pages, i.e. to a company, and technology would answer these questions automatically.

In the mean time, Siri and Google Voice is making progress all the time.

Privacy statement

Summary:

We will NEVER spam you, nor publish or sell your details to any third party. We hate spam, just as much as you do.

What data does chatbots.org store?

We’ll store all the details you enter on chatbots.org in our database and we maintain statistics of your visits with the sole reason to give you the best personalized service possible.

How does chatbots.org store my data?

We make use of Expression Engine, one of the largest weblog publication systems in the world. US President Barack Obama has used it for WhiteHouse.gov. Our system makes use of a MySQL database.

How do I access my data?

If you are a chatbots.org member, you can access your personal data through your account panel after you login. Additionally, your statistics (number of visits, numbers of reactions, duration of your visits etcetera) will be accessible to you in the future. If you are a guest, please contact Erwin van Lun, founder and managing director of chatbots.org,with your question.

What data is shown?

Chatbots.org allows members to build their profile on a dedicated profile page and show it to the outside world to help them to build their reputation as a chatbot expert. Chatbots.org also allows members to turn off this option if they prefer. However, when members have written a post or a reaction, the name they’ve entered in their profile will always be shown, including a link to their profile. If people click this link, a blocked page may be shown (dependent on your preference). We will create an ‘alias’ option in the future for those members who do not want to use their real names, but we strongly believe that professionals should reveal their identity.

If you aren’t a member, your e-mail address will be necessary when you leave a comment on the site, for follow-up comments, any questions we might have about your comment (which isn’t very likely) or for direct reactions.

When will you use my contact details?

As a member or a guest, we probably know your e-mail address and in some situations also your telephone number or residential address details.  We will NEVER spam you, nor publish or nor sell your details to any third party. We hate spam, just as much as you do.

We will use your e-mail address to notify you about new comments in a post you commented on earlier (you are able to turn this option off for eacharticle), for account settings confirmations (if you’ve changed your password, for example) or for occasional notifications on major changes in the site (typically 1-5 per year). Obviously, we’ll use your e-mail address to send you the e-mail newsletters you’ve subscribed to. We may also approach you if you’ve left some brilliant comments on the site: we might want to work with you! We will not send you product or service offerings!

We will use your telephone details after we’ve tried to contact you via e-mail and this e-mail bounced, resulted in other error messages or you simply didn’t answer for some kind of reason. If we have the impression your e-mail address doesn’t work (anymore) we might contact you via phone.

We will use your residential address details when we need to ship something to you that we can’t send by email. Additionally we’ll mention your address on invoices.

Who can modify my data?

We have a very small team (typically max five persons) that has access to your personal data. Please contact Erwin van Lun, founder and managing director of chatbots.org, for the most recent list of the individuals who can access your data. If you have subscribed to one of our newsletters, details like name and e-mail address will be made available to our e-mail service provider for single usage.

Is my data secure?

We´ll do all that we reasonably can to protect your data. Reasonable as we are not a large financial international institution or a military organization. You can expect us to follow all Expression Engine security guidelines, make backups and we don´t provide passwords to other individuals.

I received comment spam!

Unfortunately third parties try to destroy the web by putting comment spam (comments placed by robots, with links to dubious websites) onto websites and thus also on chatbots.org. We’ll do everything we can to avoid comment spam whilst also avoiding barriers for people to react (making reactions too secure or too complex will kill the dynamics of the site). It´s all about balance. Comment spammers don’t have access to your e-mail address. You can always unsubscribe to notifications on specific postings.

Any other questions

The Chat Bot Future

A chat bot is a humanlike conversational character. Its conversational skills and other humanlike behaviour is simulated through artificial intelligence. It often acts as a virtual assistant and it can have its own visualisation through an avatar or it is faceless. We expect that through the years every conversational chat bot will grow into a real virtual human.
