There’s nothing in that quote by Dr(Mr?) Weizenbaum that argues against my premise. In point of fact, I daresay that quote supports it. A “suspension of disbelief” doesn’t equate to being fooled, after all. smile

Yes Dave…  Precisely why I posted that quote.  However, use of the word “fool” is very common with chatter robot computer programs…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chatterbot
The notoriety of Turing’s proposed test stimulated great interest in Joseph Weizenbaum’s program ELIZA, published in 1966, which seemed to be able to fool users into believing that they were conversing with a real human.

Here is another quote…

Artificial Intelligence ... machines are made to behave in wondrous ways, often sufficient to dazzle even the most experienced observer. But once a particular program is unmasked, once its inner workings are explained ... its magic crumbles away; it stands revealed as a mere collection of procedures ... The observer says to himself “I could have written that”. With that thought he moves the program in question from the shelf marked “intelligent”, to that reserved for curios ... The object of this paper is to cause just such a re-evaluation of the program about to be “explained”. Few programs ever needed it more.
— Joseph Weizenbaum

Thunder Walk, now do you see?

Yes, I see perfectly.

What I see is an attempt to change the subject based on the use of a particular word (fool) taken out of context.  I’ve already indicated that my use of the word wasn’t in reference to chatbots, it was used with regard to “non-responsive answers, as well as other forms of diversion, such as cleverly-worded replies that never deal directly with the question.”  Just like you’re doing at the moment.

Now, 8PLA.NET, do YOU understand?

No, but please go on.  If you are not discussing chatter robot computer programs, then have you considered that your discussion may be what is out of context, unmasking the inner workings of chatter robot computer programmers, so the magic crumbles away?

Very cool, 8pla. I have a question about Ming. Are you defining the lines of the face and then describing a set of rotations to move the head around? Would it be possible to incorporate an image, rather than just lines, projected along some plane in 3D space? I’m wondering if this technique couldn’t be used to make a human-like face, using images for the “skin”.

Thanks for your awesome feedback, C.R.

1 - Not sure where the lip sync part fits in here. It’s just an animation with two frames swapping constantly.

Trick question: How many frames now?  http://8pla.net/php.flash.take1/

Steve Worswick - Jul 3, 2011:

2 - Not really sure what you are showing us here. It’s just a draggable circle.

Unless it’s me, I don’t see what this has to do with chatbots (especially the 2nd link)?

How about now? Are you starting to see?  http://8pla.net/php.flash.take2/

It took some time, but our chatbot patient is well on the way to making a full recovery from chabot brain surgery, to the the speech synthesis control center.  It was well worth the wait, there doesn’t appear to be any robot brain damage nor speech synthesis impairment.

This chatbot website is for personal use only.  All commercial use is very strictly prohibited:

Nice one 8pla. Is the voice generated by Google translate?

  [ # 179 ]

I see you’re using Program O, 8pla. smile There’s a “fix” for the ‘tag_close_/botresponse’ problem on the old website, if I remember correctly. It actually involves a complete re-design of one of the files, to improve performance, but I’m pretty sure that it took care of that tag being displayed at the wrong time. Have a look at http://programo.smfforfree.com/index.php/topic,200.0.html and see if that takes care of your issue. smile

Oh, and by the way, I like that voice a lot more than the old one. I didn’t realize that, in the case of chatbots, ‘brain surgery’ equates to a ‘sex change’. raspberry
