Talking with Pandorabots on Skype.

I know no one cares, but…

From reading chatlogs, I’ve long suspected that some were contacting my HTML bots via Skype.  The obvious question is, “Why?”

I stumbled across the following video which, if you’re able to follow it to where the server errors begin, demonstrates why the practice should be blocked.

There’s a “plugin” for Skype called ‘skype chatbot’ (which isn’t really a plugin at all, but a “parasite app” that “hijacks” Skype’s network stream {sort of}) that has the ability to contact a Pandorabots chatbot, but without the ability to include a unique user identifier. I was asked a couple of months ago to check it out, with the idea of trying to “get around” this problem so that it could be configured to use Program O, as well. Sadly, short of re-writing the source code and recompiling, it’s not possible to configure it to generate it’s own unique user id. Chances are that someone (probably several someone’s) is using that program to contact your chatbots, and short of having more control over your chatbot, there’s not much that can be done about it. downer

Thank you, my friend.

The multitude of “alternative” ways people are now contacting Pandorabots is causing me, and them, some difficulty.  I’ll start a new thread on that topic.  While I value the open source concept, I also feel the need to respect (and protect) the property of others.  Since so little control is afforded individual botmasters, I’m of the opinion that it’s up to Pandorabots to step in and take charge.

While the service is free, I think we’re still their customers.

Some of this seems like Russian. I’ve never had time to bother with Skype, but after the first mention of it, they’re wasting their time. The question remains, “Why do they bother?”

Thank you Steve for providing the tools. This is true botmaster happiness.
