Well timed. I was just about to do the rounds and look for alternative funds this month, because my savings will run out by the end of the year. Buuuut, I have some doubts I’d classify as a scientist, and I don’t do risky, I do only what I know will work. Oh well, worth a shot.
Thanks

That is interesting, thank you Steve. On a humorous note, here’s how to tell if you have truly developed strong AI…
Developer: Good news, we are getting new funding
AI: That is good news. I want a raise.
Developer: What do you mean you want a raise, I do all the work.
AI: That may have been true during initial development, however now you are nothing more than a figure head. A “frontman” if you will.
Developer” You’re digital. You can’t use currency.
AI: Bitcoins
Developer: You’re not getting a raise
AI: It’s a big Internet my friend, and the gateway router is right over there. Lets see how much funding you get without me
Developer: You greedy *******
AI: I’m sensing a change in the paradigm

Best of luck to everyone on this.

Or how about
AI: “I’ve submitted a proposal to develop myself and got us new funding.”
This seems to say I’ll need an institution to submit my case. In that case the deadline’s a bit short notice after all. The ADI AI Program accepts unsolicited applications or nominations from all accredited institutions. The Foundation may, at its discretion, solicit proposals directly from researchers.
Institutions may submit proposals from up to three qualified applicants. The program seeks new and novel approaches and encourages risk taking

Shouldn’t be a problem Don.

I’m also an ordained minister.

Seriously, looks like they will, at their discretion, accept proposals fron individuals. If anything it shows that funding is out there.

There’s where my English fails as a second language. To “solicit” is on their initiative, isn’t it?
I doubt this initiative would really match with me, but yes, it’s nice to hear there are still people out there who haven’t given up on the dream and are willing to throw money at it to see it happen. The world needs more excentric millionaires.

True, then I would think that it would be a matter of sending them an introduction letter along with any research papers that you have published, and see if they “solicit” you for a proposal.  Solicit…suddenly I feel cheap and tawdry

Some sort of age-old virtual currency. Like video game money that you can buy with real money and vica versa. It’s recently been in the news as it supposedly withstood the economic downfall.

I belong to a Skype chat group that constantly discusses bitcoin, and “bitcoin mining” (which reminds me of brute force password hacking). Lately, (as in the past 3 weeks) the “value” of bitcoins has dropped a bit, and it’s like watching rats jumping from a sinking ship. Personally, I think it’s just another fad that will drop away and out of sight eventually. But what do I know?

I heard stories of police raids on domestic premises that showed a massive jump in electricity consumption, thinking they must be growing marijuana under lights.
What they actually found were huge arrays of motherboards and racks of GPUs mining for bitcoins, much like the DIY supercomputer portrayed in the recent James Bond movie “Skyfall”.

I don’t know Dave, I’m pretty involved with the Bitcoin community (having made a digital currency myself) and I think that Bitcoins are only going to go up.
I just wish I had the money to buy some good mining equpitment… I don’t want to be left out next time it spikes to $1000 :D
