Thank you button

During an unexpected, exciting and energetic lunch today with
Hans-Peter Willems, he suggested to introduce a ‘Thank you’ button on each post.

This could be used to earn points.

It helps to generate a positive atmosphere on the forum.

The points could by connected to our CBO Contribution module, and to Facebook (auto-like setting).

Facebook: As soon as you press ‘Thank You’, the page is marked as ‘liked’ on Facebook as well. (we need to connect to Facebook in this case).

The button should make it clear that you’re also liking it on Facebook. I wouldn’t want a website to automatically send a ‘Like’ to my Facebook account when I click a ‘Thank You’ button that doesn’t look like it has anything to do with Facebook.

The Facebook Platform Policy also says “You must not obscure elements of the Like button or Like box plugin”, so I don’t think it’s allowed to make your own custom Like button or do this in the background. We’ll have to look into this.

As discussed with Erwin, this could be a great option. Linking to other networks (like Facebook) should be optional though.

Here’s a link to the forum where I picked up this idea: http://www.caliberforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19529

The ‘thank you’ button on posts is obviously not visible if you are not logged in as a member, but if you look at the link you’ll see directly under the first post the result of using this feature.

It’s a little like the “Was this review helpful to you?” feature on Amazon:

A little, but not quite; on Amazon you actually rate the review, while on that forum your ‘thank you’ is rating the forum member. In my view it is closer to the karma-system that used to be available on many forums, but seemed to suffer from negative effects:
