Favicon.ico

The site icon is present (http://www.chatbots.org/favicon.ico) but in my MSIE8 it doesn’t appear on the browser tab, address bar or in the favourites menu. I haven’t checked with other browsers.

Tech info here might help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon

David,

This is just a snapshot as of Sun, Mar 14, 12:40pm:

It works with full animation on Firefox 3.5.8 Linux 32bit.

It did not work at all in Internet Explorer 7 Vista 32bit.

http://www.chatbots.org/favicon.ico is present separately
in Internet Explorer 8 Windows Server 2008 64bit
but with no animation. and it did not load with the site.

Compatibility issues are to be expected with a nice favicon.ico.
Hopefully, eventually it will resolve itself on all browsers.

Reproduced! We’re working on it grin

This should now be fixed. Internet Explorer indeed doesn’t support animated favicons.

I have now made two versions:

  - http://www.chatbots.org/favicon.ico (static)
  - http://www.chatbots.org/favicon.gif (animated)

And in the page I’ve included two URLs (based on this information):

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.chatbots.org/favicon.ico">
<
link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.chatbots.org/favicon.gif"

Firefox will show the animated gif and Explorer will ignore the gif and only show the static ico.

Yes.

Confirmed fixed on all platforms reported above
in the snapshot as of Sun, Mar 14, 12:40pm.

While on the subject of favicon.ico, here is an alternative solution:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.chatbots.org/favicon.ico">
<
link rel="icon" type="image/ico" href="http://www.chatbots.org/favicon.ico"

This is added for discussion purposes only.  It is not a suggestion nor correction.
It is interesting to point out that the default IE favicon happens to be animated.
