I wrote my first chatterbot script in 1998 and was runner-up in the 1999 Loebner Prize Contest. My bots have since been featured on BBC-TV and Channel 4. These were conventional pattern-matching stimulus-response bots with pre-written responses. But now I feel it’s necessary to go beyond the ELIZA approach, which results in “empty shell” bots with little depth. What’s needed is a bot that can understand the subject under discussion, think about it, and formulate its own responses by assembling individual words into a sentence. A tall order, but one that can be tackled in stages, I hope. My goal is a Conversational System, which I define as a computer system capable of holding an acceptable conversation in a limited topic domain. (I find the term Artificial Intelligence unhelpful, as we have very little idea of what intelligence actually involves.) I currently run the Robitron discussion group at Yahoo. |
